Education cleaning runs on two calendars. In term time the building is cleaned after the last pupil leaves and before the first arrives, with daytime cover for washrooms, dining halls and entrances where the school wants it. In the holidays the building is empty and that is when floors are stripped and resealed, classrooms are deep cleaned, kitchens are taken apart and high-level work is done. The contract is planned around both.

Safeguarding shapes everything. Staff attending a school, nursery or college hold the checks the setting requires, wear identification, sign in and out, and work to the school’s policies on movement around the site. The team is fixed so the school knows who is in the building, and cover arrangements are agreed in advance rather than improvised.

The buildings vary enormously. A Victorian board school with parquet halls and stone stairs, a post-war block with terrazzo corridors, a new academy with hard floors and glass, a nursery in a converted house and a university campus of laboratories, lecture theatres and halls of residence all need different products, machinery and frequencies. The specification names the floor types and the rooms so nothing is guessed.

Procurement is formal. Schools, trusts, colleges and universities buy cleaning on frameworks and tenders with documentation, insurance and evidence requirements, and often with a service-level agreement and an audit regime. The contract is set up to provide what a bursar or an estates team needs to show governors and inspectors, without them having to ask twice.
